(a.k.a. Giorgio-Federico Hendel, George Frideric Handel; Major German baroque composer, b. Halle, son of a surgeon, assistant organ player at the cathedral 1702; friend of Telemann; st. and w. also in Hamburg (1703) Italy (1706, Kappellmeister of the Elector of Hanover at Venice 1709) and England, 1710-, 1714-. Patronized by the Duke of Burlington, by Lord Bridges, later Duke of Chandos; dir. of the Royal Academy of Music, invited by the Governor of Ireland, major composer in England and abroad during his lifetime)
