MSD K-5 Homework Guidelines Pilot

During Spring 2017, all K-5 schools in the Morris School District are piloting homework guidelines created by the teachers in each school with support from the K-5 Homework Team.

Goals:


  • Strengthen foundational literacy and mathematics skills for all students.

  • Create consistency across grade levels and classrooms regarding frequency, quality, and purpose of assignments.

  • Promote transparency and clear communication of expectations to students and parents.



Beliefs:

  • Homework should have a clear academic purpose, such as practice, checking for understanding, or applying knowledge and skills.

  • Students should be able to complete assignments with minimal parental assistance to develop independence and a sense of competence.

  • A healthy balance between home and school-related activities supports student wellness.






RESPONSIBILITIES




Teachers

  • Assign homework that is relevant to classroom learning

  • Design assignments that meet the needs of individual students

  • Review assignments and provide timely feedback

Prueba de Guía de Tareas en MSD K-5

Conceptos:

  • La tarea debe tener un propósito académico claro, servir como práctica, comprobar la comprensión, o aplicar conocimientos y habilidades.

  • Los estudiantes deben ser capaces de completar las tareas con la ayuda mínima de los padres para desarrollar la independencia y un sentido de logro.

  • Un equilibrio saludable entre el hogar y las actividades relacionadas con la escuela apoya el bienestar del estudiante.

  • Mantener una rutina para terminar las tareas

  • Fomentar la independencia y mantener actitud positiva

  • Contactar a la profesora cuando sea necesario

The new TJ homework guidelines for students grades 3-5 are a critical part of our

school-wide effort to achieve the following goals:

1.  An increase in students’ purposeful reading and analysis of fiction, non-fiction, and informational texts across content areas.

2.  Enhancing our students’ ability to clearly communicate their analysis/evaluation of fictional and informational texts through succinct, accurate, and high quality writing that uses textual evidence to support claims.


3.  Nightly independent practice of mathematical concepts and procedures learned in class.

4.  Clear and consistent homework expectations school-wide for students.

Math homework is to be independent practice of skills/concepts learned in class.

Language Arts, Science & Social Studies

Newsela :Students will have a weekly Newsela Article assigned to them. This will include the multiple choice quiz. The open ended question and annotations will alternate weekly.

Articles will include Science, Social Studies, and current event topics.



Additional Guidelines:

  • No more than two assessments per day will be administered to students (a quiz is an assessment).

  • Additional long-term projects may be assigned throughout the year. Homework may be adjusted during this time.

  • Word Study will be completed in class.

  • Work not completed during class time may become homework.
