The writing of this note was a huge effort for the CMS community. While immersed in a full speed commissioning phase before the first data arrived, it was clear that an updated description of the detector, its assembly, its testing procedures and installation protocols had to be written. Each CMS member with a certain responsibility wrote and documented his/her part, and the post edition turned into an exhaustive, precise and complete document on how to build an experiment, that will be a valuable legacy. My direct contribution was a precise description of the test protocols and final summaries of the DT chambers testing at CERN, right before the final installation of the chambers.

TITLE: Parameterization of the Response of the Muon Barrel Drift Tubes

This note contains a description of the simulation and parameterization of the drift cell used in the final design of the DTs. The details of the simulation, carried out using the GARFIELD program, are presented together with comparisons with real data. The results were summarized in an analytical space-time function, for different magnetic fields and particle incidence angles. That function was implemented in the official simulation and reconstruction codes of CMS. It was the first and most precise study performed using the final cell design. I carried on the simulation myself and was one of the main code developers for the integration into CMS.

A description of the quality control procedures used in order to test the performance of the DT chambers for CMS assembled in Madrid was the purpose of this note. A full description of all electronics components was compiled, including high voltage and front end items. Each procedure is described and discussed in detail, together with a list of common problems and solutions. Since CIEMAT was a pioneer institute in the assembly of these detectors and I was partially responsible of these tests, the document was of invaluable help for the rest of construction sites that profited from our experience.

TITLE: Fine synchronization of the muon drift tubes local trigger

DT chambers are part of the muon trigger system of CMS. In the local DT part, a sophisticated algorithm is capable of providing a coarse track measurement identifying the original bunch crossing from which the muon is coming from. In order to perform this identification properly, the full trigger chain must be properly synchronized. This document presents different synchronization strategies in order to fine tune timing of DTs with timing from LHC. The studies were carried out using real data taken with two chambers and the full trigger chain in a muon test beam, bunched with the same time structure as LHC (25 ns). These results were fundamental in order to better know and adjust the trigger system before real data taking started.

TITLE: Performance of Glass Resistive Plate Chambers for a high granularity semi-digital calorimeter.

This note contains the most relevant results obtained during several test beam campaigns of several stacks of glass resistive plate chambers, which will be used as active media for a semi-digital hadronic calorimeter prototype to be considered for future ILC experiments. In the framework of the CALICE collaboration, several GRPC designs were put under test of different particles and energies. These tests have allowed us knowing in detail the performance of our detector in order to establish the optimal working point, features, response to single particles etc. The results are crucial, in order to validate the design for a physical prototype of 1 m3 able to contain the full hadronic shower for a final check of this technology and concept for a particle-flow oriented HCAL. I actively participated in all these test beam campaigns and in the data analysis, carried on using the official ILC software tools.

Outreach activities
One of my main interests and priorities has always been the promotion and outreach of science in general, and Particle Physics in particular. Soon after moving to CERN, in 2005 I became member of the CMS Outreach Group, as representative of the DT community, being the only spanish member of the group. As such, I took responsibility in several spanish related tasks of the group, such as contact person for the spanish press, translator, visitors guide etc.
In May 2007 I had the opportunity to write a long article in the science section of “El País” about the imminent startup of the LHC accelerator. During the LHC media day on September 10th 2008, I was in charge of the Spanish press reception in the CMS center. A few weeks later, during the official LHC inauguration day I was selected with a group of four people as representative of the CMS experiment in the ceremony.
At CIEMAT I have also taken over some steps in this direction, being the CMS contact person in matters of outreach. Among them, last November I took the responsibility of the organization in Madrid of the CERN photo exhibition “El CERN a través de los ojos de Peter Ginter, la visión de un poeta” (together with Dra. Mª José García Borge from CSIC) and several associated conferences, visits, interviews etc. More recently, together with some CIEMAT colleagues, we have organized the first masterclasses for high school students from the European Particle Physics Outreach Group (EPPOG) with huge success. More recently I’ve given several talks about Particle Physics and the construction of LHC, at CIEMAT in the “Semana de la Ciencia (Science week) 2010”, in the Science Museum (Valladolid), a conference for High School students in Ciudad Real and a seminar for Secondary School teachers in Collado-Villalba (Madrid).
