The Verizon Innovative Learning (VIL) Minority Male Makers Program at the University of the District of Columbia is offering a free all-expenses paid year round program designed to engage students in high quality, hands-on learning in Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (STEM) in order to increase access to STEM focused careers and higher education. The program has two mandatory components:

1. Summer Enrichment – Students will be placed in a 2-week summer camp.

2. STEM Gentlemen’s Academy - Students will participate in Saturday entrepreneurial and life skills workshops.

In addition to the Summer Enrichment and the Gentlemen’s Academy, students will receive a mentor and participate in STEM workshops during the academic year at UDC and host sites across the District!

The program is for young males of African American and Hispanic descent in grades 6th– 8th who is a resident and attend school in the Washington, DC metropolitan area. Those selected will have the opportunity to learn 3D printing, App development, and robotics. There will be competitions, prizes and exciting field trips.

Give your child the opportunity to excel in the STEM area by receiving advance training from UDC academic leaders in the field. The Verizon Minority Male Makers program was created by Verizon, and is directed by the University of District of Columbia.

What does the program aim to achieve?

The program aims to enable minority middle school males to become creators and makers through 3D design and app development. Ultimately, the goal is to empower a new generation of minority men by giving them lifelong technology and entrepreneurship skills to build the innovations of tomorrow and to create brighter futures for themselves and their families.

What skills will the students obtain?

The curriculum will cover a range of STEM disciplines: app design and development; 3D modelling, design and printing; and robotics.


Participants will be assigned to one cohort:

COHORT A - Date: June 19th through June 30th

COHORT B - Date: July 10th through July 21st

Each Cohort is 2 Weeks - Monday through Friday

Time: 9:30 am to 3:00pm*

Curriculum: Robotics, App Development, 3D Printing

The selected participants will attend the program according to the following schedule:

Cohort A runs June 19th through June 30th - Monday through Friday, 9:30 am – 3:00 pm -

Application Submission Requirements and Deadlines:

Applicants will be required to submit a narrative (or video for 6th and 7th graders) along with one or two letters of recommendation for the application process. Requirements are outlined below and differ slightly based on grade and whether the applicant is a returning participant or new applicant. Please read the requirements carefully to ensure that you submit all of the required components of your application.

RETURNING Participants:

    • Essay OR Video (due 5/12)

      • Essay must be at least one paragraph (no less than 6 sentences) and no more than one page double-spaced using Times New Roman -12 font

      • Video must be 2-3 minutes long in MP4 format

    • One letter of recommendation from a teacher or program leader (i.e. school or outside activity/club) for a STEM related subject or activity (due 5/12)

  • 8th graders

    • Essay must be one page double-spaced using Times New Roman -12 font (due 5/12))  

    • Optional Supplement- Video that is 2-3 minutes long in MP4 format

    • One letter of recommendation from a teacher or program leader (i.e. school or outside activity/club) for a STEM related subject or activity (due 5/12)

NEW Applicant:

If your child is selected, he is expected to attend every day for the full two weeks. This packet contains the forms that must be completed and returned before the student will be allowed to attend summer program.

The Verizon Minority Male Makers Program evaluates all its programs to make sure that they are effective, and to improve them, as needed. The evaluations and results are reviewed by those who oversee the program. The evaluations and results may also be used for scholarly research to increase minority males’ entrance in to the STEM field.

During the time your son is in The Verizon Minority Male Makers Program, he may be observed by evaluators and researchers during different program activities and may be asked to give his feedback and opinions in response to questionnaires or surveys, in focus groups, and/or in interviews.

Your child’s participation is VOLUNTARY; he does not have to participate in these activities, and can choose not to answer certain questions, or decide not to participate, or withdraw from participation at any time.

These evaluation assessments are not anonymous, so your child’s name will be included on the forms that are used for the evaluation(s); however, all information and results will be kept strictly CONFIDENTIAL and personal data will not be stored. Information identifying your child’s name will be removed before the results are analyzed and given out. Participants’ names will never be used in any report or publication. Data shared with Verizon will be in aggregate and no individual level data (or identifying information) will be shared.

Finally, The Verizon Minority Male Makers Program reserves the right to use personal information (for example, permanent address, phone number, and/or email address) to contact participants after the program to gather information about their career or educational successes. Participants’ personal information will never be distributed outside of The Verizon Minority Male Makers Program – Directed by The University of the District of Columbia; will be kept completely confidential; will be used by authorized personnel only; and will be stored in password protected and secure servers or databases.
