SCENE 1 A TINY CARIBBEAN ISLET.

SCENE 2 MIDDAY. ON THE SHORE OF A POND SURROUNDED BY TROPICAL TREES.
1. ANGELA: Chano, what are you doing?
2. CHANO: The chief wants a bench, a great big bench, a super big one.
3. ANGELA: Another one? He already has one...or is it two, or three?
4. CHANO: This one has to be a very special bench. Uurrhhh…

.

5. CHANO: Zanzin, the Great Wiseman is coming to visit and it has to be ready…aaayyyy…by tomorrow.

6. ANGELA: (SURPRISED) Tomorrow?! But that’s impossible.
7. CHANO: Yes, Angela, by tomorrow! Or else... The last time Zanzin came, nine years ago…the chief had the finest delicacies prepared. You know...sailfish, lobsters…
8.ANGELA: …turkeys, cakes, ice creams...

SCENE 3 NIGHT / MORNING. IN THE PATIO OUTSIDE THE GOVERNOR'S HUT.
9.CHANO: Aaayyyy! (SEVERAL TIMES AS HE HAMMERS, CHOPS ETC)

SCENE 4 DUSK. IN THE PATIO OF THE GOVERNOR'S HUT.
10. ZANZIN: Excellent! It's been a truly marvellous dinner. But you've hardly touched your food and you look so sad.
11. GOVERNOR: Time wears on, Zanzin, and I feel older with each passing day.
12. ZANZIN: Well, look at me. I am old, too, but perfectly content.
13. GOVERNOR: But everyone regards you as a wise man. On the other hand, I’m just a….
14. ZANZIN: Isn’t being a good governor enough?
15. GOVERNOR: Being governor isn’t enough! What I really want is for everyone to remember me for doing something super special!
16. CHANO: Chief!
17. GOVERNOR: Governor! You are late with that bench!

SCENE 5 NIGHT. THE GOVERNOR AND ZANZIN ARE WALKING AND TALKING TOGETHER AND MEET ANGELA AND CHANO
18. GOVERNOR: (TO CHANO AND ANGELA) I see you are looking at my future bench.
19. CHANO: It's a tree, Chief.
20. GOVERNOR: Governor
21. CHANO: A lovely tree which some day will be big enough to ...
22. GOVERNOR: (GLANCING AT ZANZIN WITH SMILE ON HIS LIPS) to be a big bench...
23. ANGELA: No, senor. This one will be home for lots of birds.
24. GOVERNOR: Birds don’t need houses! You two just keep watering it, and we will see whether this tree becomes a bench or a home for your little birdies. Ha…ha…ha…
25. ZANZIN: Who you think you are to treat them like that?
26. GOVERNOR: The governor, that's who!
27. ZANZIN: A good leader got to treat people with respect and... Take nature for an example.
28. ZANZIN: Doesn't the moon shine the same for the governor as for the carpenter?

SCENE 6 SHORTLY AFTERWARDS. OUTSIDE THE GOVERNOR'S HUT.

29.GOVERNOR: We will see if it shines the same for everyone. (PAUSE) I'm going to touch the moon.
30. WIFE: It would be better if you come to bed!
31. GOVERNOR: I'm going to be the first man to touch the moon and we'll see if it’s true that the moon shines the same for the governor as for the carpenter.
32. GOVERNOR: Aaayyy! My head!

SCENE 7 THE FOLLOWING MORNING.
33. GOVERNOR: Chano!
34. CHANO: Yes, Chief!
35. GOVERNOR: You must build a Super Big tower with trees so that I can touch the moon.
36. CHANO: Touch…what?
37. GOVERNOR: I've already made all the calculations. (HE LIFTS HIS HAND TO THE BUMP ON HIS HEAD.)
38. CHANO: But...but…
39. GOVERNOR: What's your problem?
40. CHANO: But, Chief...
41. GOVERNOR: Governor!
42. CHANO: Are you talking about the moon moon?
43. GOVERNOR: Yes, the moon, night, moon, moon, yes!
44. CHANO: But why?
45. GOVERNOR: Because I will be fam… I mean the island will become famous… and rich!
46. CHANO: But...
47. GOVERNOR: It’s an order! In two more days the moon will be full and much closer. You see, so. You have just two days to make a huge tower.
48. ANGELA: (TO CHANO) Everybody knows the moon just looks closer when it’s full.
49. CHANO: Try to tell him that, Angela.
50. ANGELA: But to cut down trees out of craziness?
51. CHANO: We have to think of something.

SCENE 8 MORNING. AT A SPOT NEAR THE GOVERNOR'S HUT.
VILLAGERS MURMUR TOGETHER AS THEY TRY TO THINK OF A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM OF HOW TO SAVE THE TREES
52. CHANO: I know how to save the trees!

THE VILLAGERS MURMUR EXCITEDLY

53. CHANO: Chief, I've got an idea...
54. GOVERNOR: Governor!
55. CHANO: Governor, I have the solution: so that the tower can be ready in two days, we could just pile up all the furniture on the island -- wardrobes,
56. ANGELA: …tables…
57. CHANO: …benches…
58. ANGELA: …chairs...
59. CHANO: It would be faster and…
60. ANGELA

AND CHANO: … we wouldn't have to cut down trees.
61. GOVERNOR: Excellent! We’ll build the tower over there.
62. ANGELA: No…not there!
63. GOVERNOR: It will have to be sacrificed.
64. ANGELA: Chano …

SCENE 9 THE FOLLOWING DAY. IN THE FOREST.

SCENE 10 NIGHTTIME. AT THE SPOT WHERE THE TOWER IS BEING BUILT.
65. GOVERNOR: (ABOUT TO FALL) Bring more furniture!
66. CHANO: (TO THE TOWNPEOPLE) But...(SHOUTING UP AT THE GOVERNOR) … we've run out!
67. GOVERNOR: If there’s no more furniture, there are trees -- lots and lots of trees!
68. TOWNSMAN 1: You sure had a good idea, Chano!
69. CHANO: I thought it was the only way for him to forget his madness.
70. ANGELA: It’s not fair and what about the birds?

SCENE 11 SEVERAL DAYS LATER. AT THE FOOT OF THE TOWER.
71. GOVERNOR: It must be the super biggest tower ever built.
72. WIFE: And the most costly ever. Nothing that will be able to make up for the loss of our forests.
73. CHANO: There are no more trees, Chief, no more wood.
74. GOVERNOR: But there are lost of houses, and houses have doors, and walls and windows.

75. CHANO: And where are we supposed to live?
76. GOVERNOR: Trust me. Once I’ve touched the moon, we’ll be rich. Everybody will get new houses, new beds,...
77. CHANO: And what about the trees?
78. GOVERNOR: The trees will grow back…eventually. But I, I don’t have much time. Now TO WORK!

SCENE 12 NIGHT, LIT BY THE FULL MOON.
79. GOVERNOR: Nearly there! Just a little higher!
80. CHANO: (OFF) There's nothing left, Chief!

81. GOVERNOR: (OFF) Of course there's something left!
82. WIFE: Oh, no! Not our house!
83. GOVERNOR: (OFF) That's an order!
84. GOVERNOR: (ELATED) Now I've done it! Yes! I'm sure that with one more chair or something I can touch it!
85. CHANO: (OFF) Nothing's left, Chief! Absolutely nothing!
86. GOVERNOR: (DESPERATE, BESIDE HIMSELF WITH RAGE) One bench! The bench that’s at the bottom! Right now!
87. CHANO: But, Chief, if I pull it out ...
88. GOVERNOR: (OFF) That's an order! Right now!
89. GOVERNOR: Do you hear me?
EVERYONE GLANCES AT EACH OTHER IN ASTONISHMENT. CHANO AND SEVERAL OTHER TOWNPEOPLE START TO REMOVE BENCH
90. GOVERNOR: The bench! The bench!
THE BOX IS REMOVED, THE TOWER STARTS TO CRUMBLE
91. GOVERNOR: Aaaaaaaaaaa!

SCENE 13 SOME TIME LATER. DUSK.
92. ANGELA: And are you going to behave better now?
93. GOVERNOR: Yes Angela, I know now that I can’t just do whatever I want. I have to respect people and nature too. (THINKING) What about if we build…
94. ANGELA: What!!!
95. GOVERNOR: A little house for your birds. What do you think?
96. ANGELA: Mmm, good idea, Chief, but do you know how to hammer?
97. GOVERNOR: No, but Chano can teach me.
98. CHANO: (HAMMERING) Aaaaayyyyyy...
99. GOVENOR: Maybe not …
CHIEF LOOKS UP AT MOON THOUGHTFULLY
100. GOVERNOR: You are right, Zanzin, the moon shines the same for the governor, chief as for the carpenter.
CAMERA PULLS BACK TO SHOW THE BRIGHT MOON.
